Brazil’s political turmoil may risk people’s rights
Civil society organizations and social movements fear that the current political process will worsen the historical violation of peoples’ rights and reiterate that Brazilian people must decide the future of their country.
Following the controversial suspension of the legitimately elected president Dilma Roussef, the country finds itself navigating unstable waters. The provisional government has already indicated its intention to cut social expenditures, reduce social benefits, and change the governmental policies that guarantee nominal gains of the minimum wage. Meanwhile, the harassment and intimidation by police forces is increasingly reported.
In a statement, FIAN International, together with civil society organizations and social movements, expresses deep concern over the safety and physical integrity of human rights defenders, social movements and community leaders in Brazil and recalls that any decision about the future of Brazil should rely on the people.
