Statement by FIAN to the Special Rapporteur’s first report

FIAN International presented its recommendations to the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Hilal Elver, on the first report presented during the 28th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva

From 3-27 March 2015 takes place in Geneva the 28th regular session of the Human Rights Council. On this ocassion, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food submitted on 9 March 2015 a first report under Item 3: “Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development”.

FIAN International approves the first report by the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, focusing on the justiciability of the right to food and States’ extraterritorial obligations, by highlighting some key aspects.

Among others, FIAN International:

  • welcomes the reference made to the right to adequate food and nutrition, which as a concept draws attention to the nutritional dimensions of the right to adequate food and the inter-linkages between access to resources, production and commercialization of food, nutrition, health and human dignity;
  • addresses that the obligation to fulfil goes beyond humanitarian or development aid, but entails an obligation to cooperate internationally to create an international environment, including in the area of trade and investment and finances, which is conducive to the universal fulfilment of human rights.
