SDGs to be defined by human rights instead of corporate agenda

Ahead of the UN Sustainable Development Summit, FIAN International calls on Member States to base their policy-making on human rights rather than on a corporate-led agenda.

Over the coming weekend the UN General Assembly will pass the “2030 agenda for sustainable development“. This agenda, which relates to the recently adopted resolution on the sustainable development goals (SDGs), identifies areas of action that supposedly improve the living conditions of all people within the limits of ecological sustainability. FIAN International expresses concern over the content of the agenda, whilst misgivings over how it was conceived and how it is to be implemented also persist.

In a statement released today, FIAN calls upon the international community of States to regain its governing and guiding role over the UN and over big business, to stop the debasement of the UN and the trend to open the door to big business in international policy making. The organization requests States to base international policies on human rights rather than on business agendas, with the recent SDGs unfortunately yet another example of how the UN is entangled with big business. FIAN asks the community of States to build the capacity of the UN with public funding and to liberate the organization from corporate influence.
