Publication of a series of briefings on peasants rights
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, FIAN International publishes three analytical briefings, which are part of a series dedicated to feeding into the negotiations around the text for the future UN Declaration on the rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas.
The notes provide a brief introduction to a series of rights as well as their definition. A discussion follows on the obligations of States as well as the sources of international law where the recognition of the these rights lies, and within the context of peasants and other people working in rural areas. The briefings then review the rationale for the inclusion of such rights in the draft Declaration and identifie key elements that should be included in its text.
The briefings are on the following topics:
Briefings 2015:
The right to land and other natural resources
The right to sovereignty over natural resources, development and food sovereignty.
New briefings 2016
The right to seeds and biological diversity
New briefings 2018
The right to water and sanitation
To deepen the issues of the Declaration, FIAN Belgium also released a video (in French, soon available in English and Spanish)
