Open Letter to Indian Prime Minister regarding right to food violations in village of Kusum Tola
FIAN International has expressed its grave concern about ongoing violations and threats of further violations of the human right to food of about 1000 inhabitants living in the village of Kusum Tola in the North Karanpura Valley in Chatra district of Jharkhand, India due to massive expansion of coal mining on the area by Central coalfields limited (CCL).
As a result of FIAN interventions, in November 2011 the local authority in Jharkhand passed an order requiring the company to meet several conditions. FIAN International acknowledges and appreciates the order as a step forward towards safeguarding the right to food of the villagers in Kusum Tola. To date CCL has yet to fully comply with the order, therefore, in the attached letter FIAN International asks the authority in charge to ensure its implementation.
