México: Violent repression of peasants resisting the hydroelectric dam La Parota, Guerrero

In the struggle to defend their land rights against the hydroelectric dam “La Parota” the resisting peasants were recently met with violence and repression. On December 16th, 13 persons were injured when police forces and opponents of La Parota clashed in the community of Dos Arroyos, Acapulco, Guerrero. The communities are threatened by the mega project which will deprive 25.000 persons of their livelihoods.  

In this moment it is most urgent to call upon the President of Mexico to stop confronting the affected population and start a dialogue instead. He should review the project considering the obligations undertaken by Mexico under the human rights to food, to water and to housing.
