Mexico: Hydroelectric Dam threatens Livelihood of 25,000 People, Guerrero
About 25,000 people living in 22 peasant villages of Cacahuatepec and in 13 farming communities of the Acapulco municipality, State of Guerrero, are threatened to be displaced away from their livelihood, due to the construction of the hydroelectric dam “La Parota”. The project would comprise, according to the current planning, a total surface of 17,300 hectares and would deprive the affected communities from their land, their homes, their possibility to feed themselves and their livelihood.
It is therefore urgent to call upon the Mexican President to revise the project in accordance to the obligations assumed by Mexico regarding the human rights to food and housing, and to annul the project if it proves to violate human rights. Please, send a copy of the letter to the Governor of Guerrero and to FIAN Mexico.
