Honduras: Threat of forced eviction of peasant group, La Lima/Cortés
74 peasant families, members of the peasant movement “Tierra Nuestra” situated in Los Limones, La Lima municipality, Department of Cortés, are threatened by an imminent eviction. Since 2005, the banana growing company Tela Railroad Company (Chiquita) wants to move its workers from these lands – where they have been living and cultivating their basic foodstuff and vegetables since 1951 – in order to plant African oil palms there. The members of the peasant movement “Tierra Nuestra” have resisted the forced removal and have suffered all kinds of intimidation and violence by the private security engaged by the company. At this moment, the peasants are afraid to be evicted by force and to lose their food resources.
