FIAN demands end to evictions and violence in Bajo Aguán
In reaction to new acts of repression lived in Bajo Aguán, 17 organizations and international networks have made an international statement to demand protection of peasant communities
Heidelberg, Germany – May 28, 2014: Due to the new acts of repression in Bajo Aguán (Honduras), 17 international organizations and networks demand today an end to the evictions and violence against peasant communities in the Bajo Aguán valley.
The international statement states: “The common thread that connects the violent evictions of May 21, 2014 with previously documented facts on the situation of human rights of rural communities in Bajo Aguán remains the same: instead of seeking a sustainable and fair solution to the problem of land tenure, consistent with the right to food and other human rights, it attempts to stop the peasant struggle through violence and repression. Moreover, due to the lack of research, crimes remain in impunity”.
Two years ago today, the Public Hearing on the Human Rights Situation in Bajo Aguán took place to demand the realization of all human rights for the peasant communities in Bajo Aguán. Now, the signing international organizations continue their support to this case considering that this agrarian conflict is the most serious in terms of the degree of violence against peasant communities in the last 15 years in Central America.
