FIAN asks Brazilian Government to comply with IACHR on Belo Monte
Heidelberg, 25.5.11: Yesterday FIAN formally requested that the Brazilian government retract its threats to the Inter-America Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and implement the IACHR’s precautionary measures in compliance with Brazil’s binding commitments under the American Convention on Human Rights and other regional and international human rights treaties in regard to the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Dam Complex.
These steps will help ensure full recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights as guaranteed by the Brazilian Constitution and international law, contributing to the development of a culture of human rights and strengthening human rights enforcement mechanisms that are the result of a longstanding struggle for social justice.
