EU requested to take action on murder of Berta Caceres

Over 120 civil society organizations urge the EU to support an independent international investigation of Ms. Cáceres’ assassination as well as to accompany and monitor the process in Honduras.

Following some initial reactions after the murder of Berta Cáceres, civil society organizations from around the world have issued an open letter to Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade. In the letter, the organizations request the EU to support an independent international investigation of Ms. Cáceres murder and to accompany and monitor the process in Honduras through the EU delegations and Embassies and Consulates of EU Member States, amongst other measures.

The letter also reflects concerns over the situation of Gustavo Castro Soto, wounded in the attack against Cáceres. A Mexican environmentalist, journalist and member of Otros Mundos Chiapas/Friends of the Earth-Mexico, Gustavo remains in Honduras, and many fear for his safety. Media reported this week that Nelson García, another member of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) , the organization  formerly led by Berta Cáceres, was also killed during an eviction on 15 March in Río Chiquito after being hit by four shots.
