Ecuador: Hacienda Maria Teresa: Banana plantation workers in strike for their salaries

132 workers from the plantation Maria Teresa are in indefinite strike since the 6th of December, denouncing that landlords do not pay their salaries and their social and labour benefits. Furthermore, the workers are being prevented from forming a labour union by demanding a social security certificate from them. This is not required neither in the constitution nor in the labour law, for founding a labour union. The right to found a union is one of the workers’ demands to their employers. A letter-campaign sent to the Ministry of Labour is necessary to ask the Ecuadorian state to meet its obligation to fulfil access to food and to protect the labour laws of the workers.
