Coming up: Right to Food and Nutrition Watch 2014

To be released on October 8, 2014

During the month of October civil society organizations and social movements from around the world will organize events and campaigns to launch the Right to Food and Nutrition Watch 2014, which marks the ten-year anniversary of the Voluntary Guidelines to support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security, an instrument adopted by the FAO in 2004. The international launch event will take place on 8 October at the FAO in Rome.

This year’s edition the Watch, titled ‘Ten Years of the Right to Food Guidelines: Gains, Concerns and Struggles’, highlights the emergence of growing threats posed by corporate and economic interests that are increasingly gaining influence in policy spaces and taking control of food systems and natural resources worldwide.

Among the key policy processes discussed in the publication are the principles for responsible agricultural investments and the upcoming Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2). The country reports and case studies offer a mix of positive stories of progress and major challenges in the global struggle for the right to adequate food – from Guatemala to India and Sweden.

The Watch 2014 makes a call for democratic food systems and greater human rights coherence and accountability in policies at the national, regional and global level.

The Right to Food and Nutrition Watch 2014 will be launched in Badin,  Barcelona, Berlin, Coimbra, Cotonou, Copenhagen, Dakar, Hyderabad,  Jamshoro,  Karachi, Lusaka,  Manila,  Quito, Rome, Sanghar, Stockholm, Tegucigalpa, Thatta, Utrecht, Vienna, Zurich –  and many other cities and countries around the world!

The Right to Food and Nutrition Watch is the product of a collaborative effort by a consortium comprising 20 civil society organizations and social movements, and serves as the main monitoring tool of the Global Network for the Right to Food and Nutrition.
