Columbian Court Rules in Favour of Families Illegally Evicted from Las Pavas
Heidelberg, Ginebra 11.05.2011. On Friday May 6th, the Columbian media announced that sentence T-267 of 2011 had been granted in favor of the ASOCAB Cooperative families. This decision is a step towards vindicating the peasants´ rights.
On July 14, 2009, 123 families were forcefully evicted by members of the national police and the mobile riot squad at the request of APORTES SAN ISIDRIO S.A. and C.I. TEQUENDAMA, both dedicated to the cultivation of palm oil trees. The companies claim to be the rightful owners of the land. The eviction was carried out despite a national law expressly prohibiting such actions on lands undergoing the process of ‘confiscation’, which ASOCAB had initiated in order to achieve rightful ownership.
