Brazil and India, evidence that hunger and malnutrition are preventable
The series of Global Dialogues on the Right to Adequate Food and Nutrition explore the advances and challenges of these two countries in achieving national food security and the progressive full realization of this human right.
With current estimates predicting the demand for food will grow by half in the next 15 years compared to present levels, equitable access to adequate food and nutrition are expected to remain serious challenges. This leads to an urgent need for countries to study alternative ways thoroughly to tackle the issue.
Co-organized by the Centre of Equity Studies and FIAN International on 2nd June, in Dhaka (Bangladesh), the ‘Global Dialogue on the Right to Adequate Food and Nutrition’ will aim to offer learning opportunities to countries grappling with addressing hunger and strengthening food security.
From opposite corners of the planet, Brazil and India represent two distinct experiences of significant state efforts to advance the progressive realization of the human right to food. Although these two countries share similar challenges, they have made specific and contrasting choices in both their programs and laws for advancing this right. Their policy choices and resulting outcomes thereof may provide important insights to countries that are currently working on, or consider looking into, national food security plans. Policy-makers and legislators together with advocates of the right to food in other countries will be able to take advantage of this experience and see what has the potential to work for their own countries.
By illustrating the success of laws and programs in Brazil and India, as well as their broader context, the event will also mount evidence that hunger and malnourishment are preventable if appropriate policies and plans, as a result of a thorough social process that involves all segments of society, are implemented and carried out.
