10 for access to justice for all human rights
Heidelberg, 24/09/10 - The Optional protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (OP-ICESCR) adopted by the General Assembly of the UN on the 10th of December of 2008 and opened to signatures and ratifications on the 24 of September of 2009 enables new channels for the justiciability of the Right to Food at international level. The OP will enter in to force 3 months after its 10th ratification.
Today, the day of the first anniversary of the opening to signature and ratification, the NGO Coalition working for the ratification of the OP has launched a statement promoting the 10 first ratifications until the 10th of December (see statement below).
In order to support this action, FIAN International trough its different sections and coordinations is addressing letters to Presidents and Foreign Affairs Ministers asking them to adopt measures to ensure that the respective States sign and ratify the OP-ESCR until the 10th of December. Moreover in many countries such as Germany, Norway, Sweden, The Philippines, Nepal, and Mexico, signature campaigns and public events will take place during the week in order to inform on the OP and to stimulate ratifications. FIAN will follow up this specific action until the 10th of December.
