India - Kusum Tola

Demolition of farm land for mining

The expanding operations of the Indian Government mining company Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) are posing an immediate threat to the survival of about 1,000 indigenous people, who are facing eviction from the village Kusum Tola, located in the North Karanpura region in the Indian State of Jharkhand.  In 2010, villagers received a notice to leave the area in order to make way for mining operations.  Once evicted, they would lose their major sources of livelihood and would be threatened by hunger and malnutrition.
