Ana Maria Suarez Franco

Ana began at FIAN as an intern in 2002 during her PhD studies. From 2011 until 2024, she was FIAN’s Permanent Representative in Geneva. She has advocated in support of affected communities worldwide, including through her work with UN human rights mandates. Ana has also participated as an expert in international negotiations at the UN Human Rights Council.

Sofia Monsalve

Sofia is from the Colombian Andes and has a background in philosophy and political science. Her journey with FIAN began in 1997 as an intern, where she discovered her connection with struggles for land and food. From 2016 to 2025, she led with vision and dedication as FIAN’s Secretary General. Today, she continues to contribute her wisdom and experience as a Senior Adviser.

Martin Gerdemann

Martin is from Germany and has a background in finance, theology, and human rights advocacy. Before joining FIAN, he worked in Brazil for German development cooperation on microfinance and entrepreneurship and lived there for 16 years. At FIAN International, he serves as the general coordinator for projects and finance.

Jannette van Poppel

Jannette is a Dutch citizen, born and raised in Austria, who studied tourism at university. She works on FIAN’s administration, human resources, project reporting and finance issues.

Ayushi Kalyan

Ayushi coordinates FIAN’s work on corporate accountability. She trained as a lawyer with a specialisation in international human rights law and also works on famine monitoring, starvation governance and issues concerning the right to food in situations of conflict, occupation and war. Additionally, she supports FIAN’s work on women’s rights and gender.

Laura Michéle

Laura has a background in human rights and development. Her main focus is on the transition to people-centred food systems, human rights-based governance and participation, nutrition and health, and women’s rights. Prior to joining FIAN in 2013, she worked as a human rights advisor in Kenya and Mexico.

Stephan Backes

Stephan is from Belgium and has an academic background in literature, cultural studies and human rights. He previously worked in diverse CSOs, movements and networks active in the fields of economic, social, cultural rights, migrants’ rights, development education, and anti-poverty struggles in Belgium and Europe.

Amanda Cordova Gonzales

Amanda is from Peru and currently based in Mexico. She has a background in journalism, community communication, documentary filmmaking, visual anthropology, human rights and decolonial feminist activism. She has been a member of Maizal Communication Collective and Tamboras Resistencia drumming collective and specializes in Latin American social and political themes, developing alternative communication practices for political participation.

Angelica Castañeda Flores

Angélica is a Peruvian lawyer who holds an LL.M. from Columbia University in New York. Before FIAN, she held various legal roles, including at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington, D.C., and the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs in New York. Her experience also encompasses providing legal assistance to asylum seekers in New Zealand.

Glory Lueong

Glory is a rural sociologist specializing in local accountability, advocacy, capacity development, and participatory action research. Her expertise lies in promoting South-South learning, bottom-up natural resource governance, and women’s rights. Before joining FIAN, she worked to advance inclusive forest governance in the Congo Basin, supporting indigenous communities and driving community-led change.
