Historic victory for the Sawhoyamaxa indigenous community in Paraguay Some 160   Sawhoyamaxa families have been living in precarious conditions close to a highway with inadequate access to food, health, education and services, since their displacement in the 1990s. On 11 June, the President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, signed an expropriation bill that restitutes 14,404 hectares of ancestral land in the Chaco region to the Sawhoyamaxa indigenous community. The adoption of the bill marks a major victory for the community, which had been fighting for their rights to territory and adequate food for 23 years. It is also the first time that an indigenous community recovers its lands through expropriation in the young Paraguayan democracy.   Read more about this great victory …   See more photos of this historic moment ...
