Toward Community-Based Management of Artisanal Fisheries in the Gulf of Fonseca, Honduras

A new Policy Brief published by FIAN International and FIAN Honduras highlights the essential role that fisher communities play as guardians of marine and coastal commons and puts forward concrete recommendations for governance systems that are based on the extensive knowledge and experience held by the very communities who for generations have lived with and from the ocean, and who have developed practices of care and non-extractive use of this vital common good.

UN Report validates years of community concerns in Bor and Krivelj, Calls for accountability and protection of residents

Ahead of its presentation to the UN Human Rights Council this June, a new report by the UN Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises has confirmed many of the concerns that residents of Bor, Krivelj and surrounding villages in eastern Serbia have raised for years about the impacts of mining. While documenting serious human rights and environmental concerns in the Bor district, the report warns that economic development objectives are not being adequately balanced with the protection of human rights, environmental safeguards, and the sustainable use of natural resources.

On the International Human Rights Day, we demand a transformation of the UN that strengthens accountability and serves peoples not budgets

Responding to the financial crisis, the UN Secretary General proposes a UN reform that would severely weaken the work of the Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteurs and Human Rights Treaty Bodies, crumbling the capacities of a system that is already failing the most marginalized and underrepresented. We demand a real institutional transformation that guarantees stronger accountability for perpetrators of human rights abuses and violations and effective protection for affected communities.
