Honduras: Murder of Juan Martínez and Fredys Cedillo Nolasco, Members of the peasant movement lobbying for the implementation of agrarian reform in the Aguán Valley
At 8:30 pm on December 24, 2008, Juan Martínez and Fredys Cedillo Nolasco were murdered on the road just 4 km from the port of Trujillo, in the Colón department, in front of the Guadalupe Carney community. The two peasants were members of the Peasant Movement of Aguán which defends the interests of the peasant groups in the conflict regarding the land transferal of the former Regional Centre for Military training (CREM) to these groups.
Since 2000, FIAN has followed the CREM case and observed its development via a number of visits to the site and in many meetings and exchanges of communications with the respective State authorities. FIAN has repeatedly expressed its concern about the lack of serious and decisive action on behalf of the State regarding the effective transferal of the entire plot of land of the former CREM to the member groups of the the Peasant Movement of Aguán. It is urgent to send a letter to the President of the Republic of Honduras, asking him to take the necessary measures to investigate the murders and to solve the conflict of the CREM land in order to guarantee the Right to Food of the families living for eight years on this land. Please send copies of this letter to the Minister Director of the Agrarian Institute and to FIAN Honduras.
