Honduras: De facto government violates human rights

Heidelberg, 07/08/09 - Today, the International Mission on Human Rights will present its final report on the situation in Honduras before the Inter-American Commision on Human Rights (CIDH), in Washington.

Since the coup d’état of June 28, 2009 that drastically altered the constitutional order of the country, a grave situation for human rights and for restrictions to democratic liberties in Honduras has presented itself. The difficulties and obstacles for the access to justice are evident and the freedoms of the press have been drastically limited. Included in the report is a description of the results of the international observation mission that took place in Honduras from 17 to 26 July on the human rights situation. The Interamerican Commission of Human Rights will carry out an official visit to Honduras from 17 to 21 August 2009.

FIAN International, along with the other international human rights organizations that were part of the mission, will continue to follow the situation in Honduras. FIAN will also participate in the International Observatory on Human Rights in Honduras, a joint initiative with the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH), the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), the Copenhagen Initiative for Central America and Mexico (CIFCA), and the Inter-American Platform for Human Rights, Democracy and Development (PIDHDD).
