54% of people in rural areas lack access to safe water, 46% of women are illiterate, and more than 10% of the children die before their fifth birthday. 55% of the population are below the poverty line. Agriculture is the main source of income in rural areas where 85 percent of the population live. As such, land is the most important means of livelihood for the people of Uganda.
