74 million of the Brazilian people (28% of the population) lives in food and nutritional insecurity, A significant proportion of them in the rural areas, comprising peasants, landless laborers, indigenous peoples and other traditional populations. Despite recent reductions in poverty and hunger, the Brazilian government has not been able to adequately promote the Agrarian Reform, the demarcation of indigenous and other traditional lands. The extreme concentration of land property in the hands of few, and the lack of access to land is one of the main underlying causes for hunger and malnutrition, and structurally linked to most violations of the right to adequate food. The risks increase with the intensification of production of the agrofuels extracted from sugarcane, soy and other agricultural products.
