“I believe that a just society is possible, and that if we wish to achieve it, the responsibility lies within each and every one of us. Working with the women’s group ‚10th of June‘ is a unique experience for me. In an act of desperation the women settled upon a piece of land that was lying idle, but belongs to a university. They turned all their hopelessness into energy, started to cultivate, began to raise chicken, and set off to create a future. Land conflicts are not unusual in Honduras, but it is unusual that women play such a central role and get organized in such a powerful way. The law for agrarian reform is on their side. As the university is not using the land, it can be legally transferred to the women’s group. However, they still face a lengthy legal procedure. That’s where I help. We needed financial means for the court procedure, international support for the case, and some governmental authorities willing to listen to us. So far there has been no final decision, but we have quite a good chance to win and turn rights into reality.”
