FIAN Calls Upon G8 to Implement Tenure Guidelines
One year after the endorsement of the Guidelines on the Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests, FIAN calls upon the G8 to implement them in the attached statement
The G8 is currently discussing an “initiative to increase transparency of land transactions and tenure”, which could be launched at the upcoming G8 summit in June 2013. FIAN, together with social movements and other civil society organizations from all over the world strongly rejects this initiative, which will not stop land and resource grabbing.
Instead, we call upon the G8 members to fully implement the Guidelines on the Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests, that were adopted by the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) one year ago. The Tenure Guidelines have been developed in an inclusive and participatory process which lasted more than three years. They are the first international instrument on the governance of land, fisheries and forests, which applies an approach based on economic, social and cultural rights.
